How to Update Your Mac to OS X Mavericks

Without too much fuss, Apple released a new version of its OS X operating systems for Mac computers. The great thing about it is, that it's completely free for the existing Mac OS X users.

Before you continue with the OS X Mavericks update, it's recommended to backup your computer.


Read the first comment bellow to see if your Mac computer supports the new Mavericks update.

Let's proceed...

Click the Apple icon and choose Software Update... (see picture).

The OS X Mavericks update will probably already be waiting for you. Click FREE UPGRADE.

If this is the case, skip to step 5.

In case you don't see the OS X Mavericks update, then enter os x mavericks into the search field (see picture) ...

... and in Search Results click FREE UPGRADE under the OS X Mavericks.

Click INSTALL APP.

 
 
6.
 

If asked to Sign in to download from the App Store, do so...

Enter you Apple ID username and password and click Sing In.

 
 
7.
 

If you agree with iTunes Terms & Conditions click OK.

 
 
8.
 

If you agree with terms and licensing, enable the option and click Agree (see picture).

 
 
9.
 

Wait for the OS X Mavericks to download.

You can roll your mouse over the Launchpad icon to see the download progress (see picture)...

The download time depends on the speed of your Internet connection.

When download is finished, click Continue.

If you agree with the terms, click Agree...

...click Agree.

 
 
14.
 

Choose the drive where you want your new OS X Mavericks installed and click Install.

It is usually Main disk.

 
 
15.
 

If asked, enter your administrator password and click OK.

...wait for it...

 
 
17.
 

When done, click Restart.

 
 
18.
 

If asked to Close Other Applications, do so.

Save all your work if you happen to have a document open and you didn't save it yet.

 
 
19.
 

You Mac will restart and should immediately start Installing the new Mavericks OS X.

It can take little while.

 
 
20.
 

And if everything went well, you should now enjoy the brand new OS X Mavericks, Version 10.9.

To check the information about your Mac computer, click the Apple icon and choose About This Mac.

The new version of OS X supports any Mac that works with Mountain Lion and is already running OS X 10.6.8 or later.

That list of OS X Mavericks compatible Mac models is:

- iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
- MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
- MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
- MacBook Pro 13-inch (Mid-2009 or newer)
- MacBook Pro 15-inch (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
- MacBook Pro 17-inch (Late 2007 or newer)
- Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
- Xserve (Early 2009)
