It's an Internet thing that spawned from the Six degrees of separation theory, where the idea is that you can connect any two people in 6 or less steps. So if you meet a random person, you should have a common friend, or friend-of-a-friend, or friend-of-a-friend-of-a-friend,... but in average no more than 6 steps are needed to create a connection.
The Kevin Bacon thing (Six degrees of Kevin Bacon) works on a same principle. Let's say that Kevin Bacon is a center of Hollywood industry and you can connect any actor or actress to him in 6 or less steps. Let's Google for Kristen Stewart bacon number, you get the following result:
Kristen Stewart's Bacon number is 2
Kristen Stewart and Michael Sheen appeared in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1.
Michael Sheen and Kevin Bacon appeared in Frost/Nixon.
To explain: Kirsten Stewart appeared in a movie next to Michael Sheen, and Michael Sheen played with Kevin Bacon in another movie. Two steps were needed to connect Kirsten Stewart to Kevin Bacon, that's why Kirsten Stewart's bacon number is 2. If you Google for Michael Sheen Bacon number, it should be 1 because they played together in a movie, so only one step was needed to connect them. Kevin Bacon has a Bacon number 0.
All clear?
