Space: What would happen with an unprotected human on Mars? |

Rover Curiosity is really popular topic all around the world and I just thought of a question what would happen if an astronaut would takes of his space helmet on while strolling about on the Red Planet? Is the situation the same as in space or will the tiny atmosphere make some difference?
Was the scene in the Total Recall movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger somewhat realistic?

Red planet's atmosphere is really thin and mainly from carbon dioxide. Mars is also much smaller than Earth and it is believed that most of it's atmosphere has leaked into space due to the low planet gravity.
If Mars would like to have oxygen it would be good to water below the surface and split it up into hydrogen and oxygen, which is a very long process.
I think man without a mask would die instantly

There is a good article on Wikipedia about process called Terraforming of Mars by which the climate and surface of Mars would be deliberately changed and in theory making it habitable by humans. Very interesting reading.

Hello people of Dreevoo, I've been following this site for a while now and decided to register. It's very refreshing to see such an "on-point- no-bul sh*t" website and I hope it stays this way when you get really big 
Now for the question, if a human body was exposed unprotected on the surface of the Red Planet. Mars surface has only about 1% of Earth's atmosphere, it's composed mainly of carbon dioxide - about 95% and the oxygen represents only the 0.13%, thus making it quite hostile to unprotected human beings. The result wouldn't be so spectacular looking as the Total Recall movie demonstrated, but yes you would die in about 1 or 2 minutes.
Your body fluids like saliva, tears, lung moisture and blood would boil away and at the same time, you would also suffocate from the lack of oxygen. But don't forget the annual temperatures on Mars surface are around −63 °C (82 °F) so your body would also freeze. You could prolong your chances of survival (or suffering) by exhaling all the air out of your body, yes I know it sounds like an oxymoron, but the air in lungs could kill you even faster as a result of decompression. So yeah, not a pretty way to go, you would end up dry yet frozen piece of human tissue.
