I was reading this article on Wired about origins of computer passwords. And they are supposedly been "invented" in the mid 1960's for the use on a time-sharing computer called CTSS. As multiple people were using that computer, they had to separate one user from another, and that was possible if every user had their own password.

But, at first they were playing with the idea of question-based authentications, meaning instead of typing a password you would be asked a question only you knew the answer to. But computers int those days were not capable to store such amount of data, that's why they went for a more convenient solution, that being password authentication.

What is your take on passwords, we all know they tend to have a potential of not being safe and hard to remember and as such impractical? How would you change the authentication game as we know it?

With cams being bulit in more and more devices, that shouldn't be to much of a problem. It's very common to use fingerprint scan authentication these days, but there's still a password behind.

Any other ideas how to change the game?

Voice recognition perhaps? The best way to make things really secure is prolly the combination of all those possibilities, including password.

By the way, I've always been wondering; what's the point of the username field if the password field is already there? I mean, they're both meant to protect the system? But since username is public that wouldn't make much sense to me ...

I wonder what will happen if you don't have a username and two persons will use the same password.
