Are we talking about shooting videos or pictures?
I'm not quite sure if you know what aspect ratio is. It's basically the relationship in proportion between the image's/video's width and height.
So the image the size of 800 pixels x 600 pixels is in the same 4:3 proportion as the image size of 1024 x 768.
If you do the math, 800/600 = 1024/768 = 4/3 = 1,333...
So if you set your camera to, for instance 16:9 aspect ratio, the images will appear wider - meaning 1024 pixels wide image would be 576 pixels in height. Hope this will help you understand the reasons of changing the aspect ratio.

| I have pretty much the same question. Should I set the 16:9 aspect ratio on my cameras? Is 16:9 future friendly or should I stay on 4:3 like last ten years for example? |

| Again it all depends, if you want wide movie style images, than go for 16:9, also more and more cameras come with a 16:9 aspect ratio by default. |

Another aspect to be considered is that nowadays you are viewing pictures on TV which has 16:9 aspect ratio.
So a 16:9 ration might not be such a bad idea.
