Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster: On April 26, 1986, Reactor 4 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine exploded, causing the worst nuclear disaster in history.
Evacuation Zone: The disaster led to the creation of an exclusion zone of about 30 kilometers (18 miles) around the plant, which remains largely uninhabited.
Radiation Release: The explosion released a massive amount of radioactive material into the atmosphere, contaminating large areas across Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia.
"Liquidators" Heroes: Thousands of workers called "liquidators" were tasked with cleaning up the site and containing the disaster, often at great personal risk.
Chernobyl Sarcophagus: A concrete structure called the sarcophagus was built to encase Reactor 4, preventing further release of radiation. It was later replaced by the New Safe Confinement in 2016.
Wildlife Thriving: Surprisingly, despite high radiation levels, many species of wildlife have returned and even thrived in the exclusion zone.
Tourism Growth: Since the 2010s, Chernobyl has become a dark tourism destination, with guided tours to the abandoned town of Pripyat and the reactor site.
Health Impact: The disaster caused numerous health issues, including an increase in thyroid cancers, especially among children exposed to the fallout.
Soviet Secrecy: The Soviet government initially tried to cover up the incident, delaying evacuation and warning efforts.
Popular Culture: Chernobyl’s story has been depicted in numerous documentaries, films, and the acclaimed 2019 HBO miniseries "Chernobyl," which brought renewed attention to the disaster.
