Each year women around the world celebrate March 8 as the International Women's Day. It all started in 1910 when socialist fighter for women rights Clara Zetkin presented the initiative at the second International Conference of Working Women held in Copenhagen. As the result International Women's Day was born.
International Women's Day was honoured the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland on 19 March 1911. In 1913 the date was transferred to 8 March and so it remained the global date for the International Women's Day ever since. Its strength grew from year to year and is now an official holiday in countries like official holiday in Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, China (for women only), Cuba, Georgia, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Madagascar (for women only), Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Nepal (for women only), Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Zambia. In many other countries it might not be an official holiday but it still widely honored and observed. The custom is to give flowers or other small gifts to mothers, grandmothers,wives, girlfriends, teachers or any other important women in our lives.
As the important improvements on the field of women rights have been made there are still millions living under the oppression and their basic human rights being exploited. Clara Zetkin's works still needs to be continued. Non the less, Happy International Women's day to all the ladies out there!
