Have you heard about the new open source Android powered gaming console called OUYA? Guys who built it put it on the Kickstarter with a funding goal of $950,000 but it surpassed that figure by far, at the and of the campaign they raised $8,596,474 which is the second highest raising project in Kickstarter's history!

The $99 console itself looks awesome and comes with a traditional yet stylish looking controller featuring a built-in touchpad, the additional controller will cost you $50. OUYA is a so called open game console, meaning all developers will be able to develop games without any licensing, retail or publish fees, unlike the XboX 360, PlayStation 3 or Wii. There will be a OUYA store for getting the games and apps, plus it will include the TwitchTV app and access to the OnLive video game streaming service.

Another cool thing is, they encourage hackers to root the console without voiding the warranty. The screws on the device are all standard so the hardware hackers can create their own peripherals and connect via USB or Bluetooth.

The OUYA specifications:

- Tegra3 quad-core processor
- 8GB of internal flash storage
- HDMI connection to the TV, with support for up to 1080p HD
- WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
- Bluetooth LE 4.0
- USB 2.0 (one)
- Wireless controller with standard controls , a touchpad
- Android 4.0
- Ethernet

OUYA will be available in march but you can already send a pre-order on their official website http://www.ouya.tv/

The OUYA founder and CEO Julie Uhrman just revealed that the console will get hardware refreshes on an annual basis. Meaning there will be one OUYA a year, OUYA 2, OUYA 3 ,...

To celebrate the release of OUYA the MakerBot Design Team turned the original OUYA enclosure design files into an enclosure that will print well on the MakerBot Replicator 2 Desktop 3D Printer. So basically you can print out your very own OUYA gaming console casing.

You can read more about it and download the .stl files needed to 3D print out the console on the MakerBot Thingiverse website.

I like it. The only thing that bothers me, is the lack of updates from Google. When Google will develop operating system which will be instantly updated on ALL devices, that they will succeed.
