A rare and graceful space event took place in northern part of Australia. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, and the Moon fully blocks the Sun. For this to happen we need a new moon - the phase of the Moon when it lies closest to the Sun in the sky as seen from the Earth - and sun, Moon and the Earth need to be perfectly aligned.

And a time-laps video of the magnificent display of nature.

Video by NASA explaining a bit more about the solar eclipses and capturing them "on film".

And some more from the washingtonpost.com of the total solar eclipse 2012 in Australia and the last photo sequence is by Scott Martin.
