Create a letter tiles logo with Photoshop
We will create a logo or a sign with scrabble letters looking pieces and put them onto to custom background pattern.
1.
Click here to download the pattern used in this tutorial.
Open it in Photoshop, in the menu click Edit and choose Define Pattern...
Enter a name for the new pattern and click OK.
2.
Create a new document by clicking File and then New...
You can choose larger dimensions for the new document (see picture) and click OK.
3.
Let's now fill the document with our pattern. In the menu click Edit and choose Fill...
In the Fill settings window choose Pattern for the Use option and then choose your pattern as a Custom Pattern.
Click OK.
4.
Document is now filled with your pattern.
Now set some light shade of a brown color.
I decided to go for the #ead89f.
5.
Choose the Rounded Rectangle Tool.
Click and hold the Rectangle Tool until more options show up then choose the Rounded Rectangle Tool.
6.
In the toolbar above set 5 px as a Radius.
7.
And create a domino like rectangle similar to mine.
Don't make it too big, and you can resize it later on as well if needed.
8.
Let's add some effects to the shape ...
In the menu click Layer, Layer Style and choose Drop Shadow...
In the settings window choose the same options as I did.
Don't close the window yet ...
9.
Click Bevel and Emboss and choose the same settings as I did.
Don't close the window yet ...
10.
Click Contour and choose the similar settings to mine.
Don't close the window just yet ...
11.
Now click the Gradient Overlay and again choose the similar settings to mine.
Click OK.
12.
You should end up with something like this (see picture).
13.
Choose the Horizontal Type Tool (press T for a keyboard shorcut).
14.
In the toolbar above choose the same font as I did and make it Narrow.
15.
Choose black for the Text color.
16.
Click on a document (not the tile itself) and type a letter, after you type a letter press and hold Ctrl key and move the letter onto the tile and if needed resize it accordingly while still holding Ctrl.
Just release the Ctrl key when you are done resizing the letter.
17.
In the menu click Layer, Layer Style and choose Drop Shadow...
In the settings window choose similar settings to mine. Click OK.
18.
You should by now have 3 layers. Text layer, shape layer and the Background layer.
We now need to group the Text and the Shape layer. Hold the Ctrl key and select the both layers.
19.
In the menu click Layer and choose Group Layers.
20.
Both layer should now be in a Group (see picture).
We just made our job easier if we want to add more letter tile pieces with the same shape and font.
21.
Choose the Move Tool (press T for a keyboard shorcut).
22.
Press and hold Alt alt key click and hold the tile and drag it with your mouse.
This is a quick and handy way to duplicate layers.
23.
Press Ctrl + T, to enter transformation mode and rotate the new letter a bit like I did, then press Enter to confirm the change.
To change the letter, choose the Horizontal Type Tool again and click the letter on the tile enter text editing mode.
