How to install and use Microsoft SkyDrive

Microsoft's answer to DropBox or Google Drive is called SkyDrive, now with the whole new Metro interface. We will sign in to the service, download and install sync app for your Windows computer.

Go to http://skydrive.live.com to open the Microsoft SkyDrive sign-in page.

Enter your Microsoft Live account data (email and password) and click Sign in.

Now that you are signed in, this is your SkyDrive homepage with 7GB of storage available for your documents, pictures or any other files.

Let's now download and install the app which will allow you to copy files to SkyDrive directly from your Windows computer.

Click PCs in the menu on the left.

Click Download SkyDrive for Windows.

When downloaded start the SkyDrive installation by double clicking the SkyDriveSetup.exe installation file you downloaded.

If a warning pops up, just click Run to continue.

SkyDrive is installing ...

When done, click Get started button.

Now enter your Windows Live account data and click Sign in.

Click Next.

If you want to change the installation location click Change.

Click Done.

Your SkyDrive Windows app is now ready, there should be a new SkyDrive shortcut to a SkyDrive folder under your Favorites in Windows Explorer.

If you now copy any document/file into SkyDrive folder, it will get automatically uploaded to your SkyDrive.com storage on the Internet. We will try that shortly.

There is also a new SkyDrive toolbar icon. If your right click it and choose Settings ...

... here are the SkyDrive settings. You can control if you want SkyDrive to start automatically when you login to Windows, or if you want to deactivate the SkyDrive, meaning the files on your computer will no longer be up-to-date with SkyDrive.com, then click the Unlink SkyDrive.

Now try and copy a picture to SkyDrivePictures folder.

If you now go back to your SkyDrive.com account and click Files ...

... there should be a picture you copied to a SkyDrive folder on your computer already waiting. Click Pictures ...
