Use RawTherapee to open and edit RAW images

RawTherapee  is a free open source application for opening and editing RAW image files. It works on all major operating systems such as Windows, Linux and Mac OS X.

First we need to download the Raw Therapee program from their download page.

Click here for the RawTherapee download page.

Now look for the RawTherapee version suitable for your operating system and click the link.

I'm using Windows 7 64-bit so I've chose the latest version of the RawTherapee for Windows Vista/7/8 64-bit.

As you can see, there are also versions for different linux distributions available and if you are a Mac user you can also download one of the Mac OS X versions RawTherapee.

Save the .zip file to your computer.

Click to extract the RawTherapee zip file.

And start the installation by clicking the RawTherapee.msi file in the zip you just extracted.

In case you get a Security Warning, just click Run.

Then click Next > ...

... choose where on your computer you want to have RawTherapee installed and click Next > ...

You can always leave the default folder.

... Next > ...

... in case you get Downloaded from the internet warning just click Yes and wait for the program to install.

Launch the Raw Therapee by clicking the new icon.

If you can't find the icon go to Windows Start button, All programs, Raw Therapee and Raw Therapee.

If you want to read the notes about the Raw Therapee you can read them otherwise close the pop up windows.

And for a few quick RawTherapee interface tips:

On the left you can choose the drive where your RAW image files are located ...

... then choose the folder ...

... and you should be able to see the RAW images in the right pane. Just double click to open the images.

Now as the RAW image is open, use the tools and settings on the right side to adjust and edit the image as you want.

You can change the exposure, highlights, contrast, shadows, colors, tones, brightness, sharpness, saturation, you can crop the images and much, much more.

Just try out the different settings, experiment and have fun.

To save the RAW image into am JPEG format or similar, click the Save button at the bottom or press Ctrl + S.

Name the image, choose the folder where you want to save it ...

... choose the file format ...

... set the image quality ...

Better the image quality bigger the image size on the disk, poorer the quality of the image, smaller size of the image file.

... and click OK.

If you now go to the folder where you saved your file in Windows Explorer, you should be able to see it there.
