  Author: mat | Version: CS5 | 26th May 2012 |

1.

Create a new Photoshop document with Width of 851 and Height of 315 pixels.

2.

Choose the Gradient Tool.

3.

Click to edit the gradient (see picture).

4.

Let's now make a colorful basic pattern for your new Facebook cover image.

Click the little Color stop icon (see picture).

5.

Click the Color button to enter the color chooser (see picture).

6.

And choose some bright color you like, then click OK.

Use the color slider to browse between different colors.

7.

Let's now add another color...

Click where I clicked to add a new color stop (see picture).

8.

Click the Color button to enter the color chooser.

9.

And again choose another nice color you like and goes well with the previous one and click OK.

10.

Now continue with the previous steps to create a rainbow like effect.

I added six different colors, you can add as many as you want, just don't over do it and avoid color clashing. You can also click and drag the color stop sliders to adjust the positions a bit.

11.

Now create a gradient by clicking, holding the mouse button and drawing a line similar to mine.

You can repeat this step as many times as you like until you're satisfied with your gradient.

12.

Let's now create a duplicate of your current background layer.

Right click the Background layer and choose Duplicate layer...

13.

We will now make a pixelated square effect.

In the menu click Filter, Pixelate and choose Mosaic...

In the Mosaic settings window set Cell Size to 53 square.

14.

And this is how it looks like by now.

15.

We will now add an extra touch to a pixelated image.

Choose the Polygonal Lasso Tool.

16.

And create a selection like I did.

Just click from one point to the next and go a whole way around.

When done with selection press Delete key to delete the selection.

17.

With your duplicated layer still selected, click fx (Add layer style) button and choose Drop Shadow...

18.

Set Opacity to 50% and angle to 30 degrees.

Click OK.

19.

And that's it, your very own colorful and awesome looking Facebook Cover Picture!

20.

Let's now save it in a way that is best for Facebook.

In the menu click File and choose Save for Web & Devices...

Choose JPEG, set Quality to 100 and choose the Convert to sRGB option.

Click Save ...

21.

... name your new Facebook Timeline Cover image and Save it to a folder of your choice.

All you have to do now is upload it to Facebook, sit back and enjoy your friends liking your new Cover picture. :)
