Car wheels burnout Gimp tutorial

Let's make Rimac Concept_One electric supercar look like its rear wheels are spinning and smoking.

  Author: mat | Version: 2.8.0 | 17th May 2012 |

1.

Open a picture of a car you want to smoke some wheels on.

I've chosen a Rimac Concept_One electric supercar. Click here if you want to know more about this car.

2.

Choose the Free Select Tool.

3.

And select the wheel the way I did.

Just keep clicking around wheel and when you come around click the point you started with to close the selection.

4.

Let's now make the wheel spin.

In the menu click Filters, Blur and choose Motion Blur...

In the Motion Blur settings window choose Radial and set angle to about 26.

5.

You wheel should now be spinning.

6.

Let's now recreate the smoke of a burning tire.

In the menu click Filters, Render, Cloud and choose Fog.

7.

Now press Ctrl + F to apply the fog filter once again.

8.

You should now have two Clouds layers as fog filter automatically creates a new layer. Right click the upper most Clouds layer and choose Merge Down.

Both cloud layers are now merged in a one single cloud layer.

9.

Choose Eraser Tool.

10.

Set Opacity to 80, choose soft Hardness 025 brush and set the according eraser size.

Size depends on how big the picture you are working on is. You can always change the brush size.

11.

Now start erasing fog only to leave the wheel spinning side of the car still in a smoke (see picture).

You need to go over the areas more then once to completely erase fog, as we set the opacity to 80.

12.

To make remaining  fog look more realistic and softer, click around fog's edges, but click to erase, don't "paint" to erase.

13.

And for some last fine tuning, choose Clone Tool.

14.

Set the Opacity to about 61.

15.

We are going to clone the smoke a bit to make it thicker around wheel.

Hold Ctrl key and click the area where you want to clone the fog from ...

16.

... release Ctrl and click around wheel to make the fog a bit thicker.

You can also click on other areas as well to make smoke look more dynamic.

17.

Voila, Rimac Concept_One is doing a burnout without anyone behind the wheel. :)
