Why would you even want to change your computer name? It's really not necessary, but if you have a network of computers its easier to identify them with their logical names.
Click Start, right click Computer, click Properties.

Next to Computer name: you can see the name of your computer.
My computer name is MatBook.
|

Let's change it.
Click Change Settings.
|

|

And type your new computer name in the Computer name: field.
I wanted to name my computer "mat's notebook" but, after clicking OK, I got the false computer name warning massage, explaining the characters that are not allowed.

Then I changed it to matsnotebook and clicked OK.
Bottom line is, there shouldn't be any special characters or empty space in your computers name, just keep it simple.

Your name will be changed after you restart your computer.
Click OK.
|
|

|
If you want your name changed at once, click Restart Now and your computer will restart wit the new name you chose.
You can also click Restart Later and the name will change at the first restart of your computer.
