Design a brushed metal icon using Photoshop
We will design a nice brushed metal, aluminium looking icon from scratch, using Photoshop.

1.
|
|
|
Create a new Photoshop document with a size of 500 x 500 pixels and white background.
Choose the Rounded Rectangle Tool.
|
|
|
2.
|
|
|
Set the Radius to 40 px.
|
|
|
3.
|
|
|
Set the foreground color to #5f5f5f.
Create a new layer and draw a rounded rectangle.
|
|
|

|
|
Click the layer fx button and choose Gradient Overlay...
|
|
|

|
Leave the default black to white Gradient and set Opacity to 77%.
Click OK.
|

|
|
Press Ctrl + J to duplicate the layer.
Press Ctrl + T to enter free transform mode then set Width (W:) and Height (H:) to 96% (see picture).
Press Enter.

|
|
Now double-click the Gradient Overlay effect of the duplicated layer (see picture).
|
|
|

|
Set Opacity to 100% and click the gradient.
|
|
|

|
|
|
Set the new gradient as I did.
The left and right color should be set to color code #575757 the middle one to #b6b6b6.
Just click under the middle of a gradient to add a new color (see picture).

Choose the Inner Shadow on the left side and choose the same settings as I did.
|
|
|

|
Choose the Bevel and Emboss on the left side then choose the same Structure settings as I did ...
|

... and same Shading settings as I did.
Click OK.

This is how it should look like by now.

Choose the Horizontal Type Tool.
|
|
|

|
Choose some "beefy font", enter a letter, set an according size and place it in a middle of the icon.
You can press Ctrl + T to resize the letter.

Click effect (fx) button of the new text layer and choose Inner Shadow.
|
|
|

|
Choose the same settings as I did.
|
|
|

|
|
Choose Bevel and Emboss on left side and choose the same Structure settings as I did ...
|

|
... and choose the same Shading settings as I did.
|
|
|

|
|
|
Choose Stroke on the left side and choose the same settings as I did.
Click OK.

|
|
Create a new layer.
Press D to set a black foreground color.
Press Alt + Delete to fill the layer with black color.
In the menu click Filter, Noise and choose Add Noise...
Choose the same settings as I did and click OK.

In the menu click Filter, Blur and choose Radial Blur...
Choose the same settings as I did and click OK.
|
|
|

|
All you have to do now is set Screen for a new layer's blending mode.
