World's smallest chameleons discovered in Madagascar

Happy days for science and nature, researchers have found four new species of smallest chameleons ever.

The cute tiny little fellows, known as the leaf chameleons were found in rainforests of northern Madagascar. The area has been already know for small species, which look like a smaller version of bigger animals.

Chameleons tend to look quite alike, so the scientist had to use genetic analysis to find out to which species of chameleons they actually belong to.

The leaf chameleons, scientifically called Brookesia, live on a very limited area. The smallest members of Brookesias, which have been found only recently and are called Brookesia micra, were found on a tiny island Nosy Hara, where such cases of such dwarfism - short stature resulting from a medical condition - are already well known. Scientists believe that species cannot reproduce faster for the lack of resources and pressure on this island.

You can see on the pictures, how tiny these little buggers really are.
