How to blur background in Photoshop

There are many ways to recreate  Dept Of Field (DOF) effect using Photoshop, let's have a look at one of the better ones.

1.

Open a picture you want to blur the background on.

2.

Choose the Quick Selection Tool.

Or any other selecting tool you feel more comfortable with.

Click here for the lesson on how to use Quick Selection Tool in Photoshop.

3.

Select the object or objects you want to keep sharp.

I selected the lion and the front part of the shot.

4.

In the menu click File and choose Refine Edge... (Alt + Ctrl + R for a keyboard shortcut).

5.

In the new window set Output to Layer Mask.

6.

Choose the similar settings to mine and click OK.

You can choose the settings that work best for your selection.

7.

You made the selection a bit smoother so the cut object should look much better then it would without using Refine Edge function.

8.

In the menu click Filter, Blur and choose Lens Blur...

In the new window set the Source to Layer Mask and check the Invert option.

Click OK.

9.

Lets disable the layer mask we activated in previous step.

Right click the layer mask next to the layer thumb picture and choose Disable Layer Mask.

10.

Done, pretty realistic DOF right?
