1.

Open a picture you want to "retronize".

2.

In the menu click Layer, New Adjustment Layer and choose Curves.

Set the curve to a slight S to boost the contrast up a bit ...

3.

... choose the Red channel and adjust the curve ...

4.

... choose the Green channel and adjust the curve ...

5.

... choose the Blue channel and adjust the curve ...

Try your own curves if my settings don't work on your picture.

6.

Press Shift + Ctrl + N to create a new layer. Name the layer if you want and click OK.

Choose the Paint Bucket Tool.

7.

Choose the Magenta color (#FF00FF is the color code) and click the picture to fill the layer.

8.

Set the layer blending mode to Soft Light and set the Opacity to around 20%.

9.

Press Shift + Ctrl + N to create a new layer. Name the layer if you want and click OK.

Choose the Brush Tool ...

10.

... choose a red Foreground color ...

11.

... and paint the picture around the main object.

Don't be to accurate.

12.

Set the layer blending mode to Linear Dodge (Add) and set the Opacity to around 20%.

13.

Press Shift + Ctrl + N to create a new layer. Name the layer if you want and click OK.

Right click the picture and choose Stroke...

If you don't get the same right click choices as I did, choose some selection tool like Rectangular Marquee Tool then try and right click the picture again, you should now be able to see the Stroke option.

14.

Set the Width to around 120 px, Color should be Black and Location Inside.

Click OK.

15.

In the menu click Filter, Blur and choose Gaussian Blur... set the Radius to around 200 pixels and click OK.

16.

Set the Opacity of the layer to about 65%.

We just made a slight vignette effect to make the picture look more authentic.

17.

Press Shift + Ctrl + N to create a new layer. Name the layer if you want and click OK.

Choose the Paint Bucket Tool, press D to set the foreground color to black and fill the layer with color.

18.

Let's add some noise for the real old school feel.

In the menu click Filter, Noise and choose Add Noise...

Set the Amount to about 22%, Distribution to Gaussian and the Monochromatic option should be checked.

19.

Now let's soften the noise a bit and we're all done.

In the menu click Filter, Blur and choose Gaussian Blur... set the Radius to around 1 pixels and click OK.

20.

Set the layer blending mode to Screen ...

21.

... and you're all done!

How's that for the retro feel?
