Text in space

We're going to prepare a deep space like looking background and then add some subtle yet visible text.

  Author: mat | Version: CS5 | 5th November 2011 |

1.

Create a new document, go to Filter in the menu, choose Render and then choose Clouds.

2.

Choose the Brush Tool.

3.

Right click the document and choose quite a big Size, set Hardness to 0%.

4.

Create a new layer.

5.

Choose some bright color.

I've chosen magenta like color.

6.

And paint about a third of your document.

7.

The choose two other colors and paint the rest of the document.

You can choose any colors you want and paint the document in any way you wish.

8.

Right click the Background layer and choose Layer From Background...

9.

The background layer became Layer 0.

Now create a new layer, and drag it to the bottom of the layers.

10.

Choose the Paint Bucket Tool, press D to set black as a foreground color and click the document to fill the new layer black.

11.

Now choose the middle layer (former background layer) and set it's Opacity to about 30%.

12.

Create a new layer and drag it to the top of the layers, choose the Paint Bucket Tool and fill the layer with black color.

In the menu click Filter, Noise and choose Add Noise...

Choose the same settings as I did (see picture) and click OK.

13.

Set the new layers blending mode to Screen.

14.

Press Ctrl + L to adjust the layer level.

Choose the same or similar settings as I did.

You want to make the some "starts" shine more and other shine less just like the clear night sky.

15.

This is about how it should look like by now.

16.

Choose the Brush Tool a fairly big brush size and a black foreground color.

In the menu click Layer, Layer Mask and choose Reveal All.

17.

Now start clicking your document.

You will notice the stars to be disappearing, you want to achieve the deeper feel of the space. Don't exaggerate, you don't want to lose all of your stars.

18.

Create a new layer and drag it to be the second layer from the top.

Layer between stars and colors.

19.

Choose the Horizontal Type Tool.

Choose a "beefy" font ...

20.

... and enter some text.

21.

Set the text layer's blending mode to Overlay.

22.

Click the Commit any current edit button to commit the text (see picture).

23.

Right click the text layer and choose Convert To Smart Object.

In the menu click Edit, Transform and choose Perspective.

Transform the text in any way you want by clicking and dragging little points on transformation lines (see picture).

Press Enter to commit the changes.

24.

All done, but it looks way cooler on a bigger scale.

You can add a little Drop shadow effect to the text or just go crazy with experimenting.
