1.
Start GIMP and open a picture where you want to select and duplicate an object.
I'm going to duplicate a tree.
Click here for the lesson on how to install the free GIMP.
2.
Choose Scissors Select Tool.
3.
Click the edge of the object ...
4.
... and start clicking around and around the object ...
More selection points you choose more accurate is the selection.
5.
...until you come all way around, to close the selection click the very first selection point.
6.
Now select the Feather edges option and set the Radius to somewhere between 5 and 10.
7.
Click in the middle of the object to create a selection.
8.
In the menu click Edit and then choose Copy (press Ctrl + C for shorcut).
You just copied the selection.
9.
Now we need to paste it into a new layer.
In the menu click Edit, Paste As and choose New Layer.
10.
And here's the clone!
11.
Now choose the Move Tool ...
12.
... click the object and drag it anywhere you want.
13.
Then choose the Scale Tool ...
14.
... click the object and then click and drag one of little squares to resize the object (see picture).
Press Ctrl when resizing to keep the object in ratio.
15.
Click Scale to confirm the changes.
