Not even a year ago, Project Ara was pretty much still a concept revealed by Phoneblocks and Motorola. Now Google announced the device will probably go on sale in the first quarter of 2015 and it will cost you affordable $50.
Ara, the build-your-own-phone will reportedly come in 3 different sizes, but the exact device measurements are yet to be released.
Project Ara head Paul Eremenko says, "The question was basically, could we do for hardware what Android and other platforms have done for software? Which means lower the barrier to entry to such a degree that you could have tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of developers as opposed to just five or six big [manufacturers] that could participate in the hardware space.”
The creators of Ara are working on the first edition of the modular smartphone, targeted at a price of $50, but it will only come with a Wi-Fi and no cellular connection. But the good news is, when the money permits and the user is ready for an upgrade, they can simply buy cellular module, a better camera, more memory, GPS or pretty much anything the market will demand.
