Open GIMP.

In the menu click File, Create, Logos and choose a type of logo you want to create.
I chose Basic II, I like to keep things clean and simple.

Enter the Text of your logo, set the Font size, choose the Font, Background color and Text color.
The number and types of setting depend of the logo you've chosen.
Click OK when done.

Cool thing about this "automatic" logo creation is the GIMP sorts your logo into layers so you can tweak it to give it even more personal touch (see picture).
Press Ctrl + L if you can't see the layers.
