Create your own Doom avatar using Photoshop
Old school gamers with a bit more years on their backs should be familiar with the legendary Doom game. This time I will show you how to create your own Doom avatar just for the heck of it.

1.
Open random photo from the legendary game Doom.
You can found tons of Doom gameplay pics on web or you can just download it here.
2.
Choose Rectangular Marquee Tool (M for a keyboard shorcut).
3.
Select the avatar part (see picture).
4.
Choose the Brush Tool (B for a keyboard shorcut), hold Alt (Option key on MacOS) and click the grey area on the avatar (see picture)
This way you can select a new color in a really quick way.
5.
Now press Alt (Option on MacOS) and Delete keys at the same time to fill the selection with the color you chose in the previous step.
In the menu click Select and choose Deselect.
6.
Then open the random photo with face.
I've opened a photo of an actor Dwayne Johnson, who also played as the main actor in movie Doom. Download the photo here.
7.
Choose the Quick Selection Tool (press W for a keyboard shorcut).
8.
Select the person.
Click here, for the how to use quick selection tool tutorial.
Now copy the selection by clicking Edit in the menu and choosing Copy.
9.
Now go back to your Doom image.
To jump from one document to another, simply use the document tabs or click Windows in the menu and choose the document.
10.
In the menu click Edit and choose Paste.
Use Free Transform mode to put the avatar where it belongs: In the menu click Edit and choose Free Transform.
When done transforming the image press Enter to confirm the changes.
11.
Choose the Rectangular Marquee Tool (M for a keyboard shortcut) and select the parts of the image that are obsolete, press Delete to get rid of them
In the menu click Select and choose Deselect.
12.
Press Ctrl (Command on MacOS) + J, to duplicate the avatar image.
13.
In the menu click Filter, Pixelate and choose Mosaic...
In the new window set Cell Sizeto about 5 square and click OK.
14.
Set the duplicated layer's Blending Mode to Overlay (see picture).
15.
This is it.
In case you want to make the avatar a bit darker or brighter click Image, Adjustments and choose Levels.
16.
And this is how the whole Doom game play image looks like.
