How to put a person behind window

In this easy to follow tutorial you will cut a person out of one picture and put them in a house behind a window using GIMP.

  Author: mat | Version: 2.6.11 | 18th January 2012 |

1.

Open a picture with a person you want them to be behind a window.

Click here to download the picture of Queen Elisabeth II used in this tutorial.

2.

Choose the Free Select Tool.

3.

Create a selection round the person (see picture).

4.

In the menu click Select and choose Feather...

In the new Feather Selection window set the value to 2 pixels and click OK.

Press Ctrl + C to copy selection.

5.

Now open a picture of a building with windows.

Click here to download the house used in this tutorial.

6.

Create a new layer (see picture).

Press Ctrl + L if you can't see the Layers.

7.

In the new window choose the Transparency and click OK.

8.

Press Ctrl + V to paste your selection to the house picture.

9.

Press Shift + T to activate the transformation mode and resize the picture to fit the window and house proportions.

Hold Ctrl key when resizing to keep the aspect of your selection in tact.

Press Enter to confirm the changes.

10.

Move the queen or some other person in to the position so it looks like they're watching through the window.

Press Shift + Ctrl + A to remove the selection around the object.

11.

Set the layer opacity to about 55.

12.

Right click the Floating Selection layer and choose Anchor Layer.

If you don't see a floating selection layer among your layers just skip this step.

13.

Choose the Eraser Tool, set the appropriate size ...

14.

... and erase the parts of the person that should be seen.

Parts that are covering the wooden parts of a window in my case.

15.

I've reduced the layer Opacity once again (see picture).

16.

In the menu click Colors and choose Levels...

Adjust the settings and click OK.

I've set the dark tones to 17 and middle tones to 0,87.

17.

Now we are going to create a simple little shadow over the person for a more realistic feel.

Create a new layer.

18.

Choose the Free Select Tool.

19.

And create a selection similar to mine.

20.

In the menu click Select and choose Feather...

In the new Feather Selection window set the value to 7 pixels and click OK.

21.

Choose the Bucket Fill Tool.

22.

Press D to set the black foreground color.

And click the selection to fill it (see picture).

23.

Set the layers Opacity to about 30,7.

24.

Behave, the Queen is watching you! :)
