Car Burnout Photoshop tutorial

Let me show you how to make the wheels spin and smoke on a car that isn't moving.

  Author: mat | Version: CS5 | 2nd January 2012 |

1.

Open a picture with a car taken from aside.

I'm going to make this 2008 Hennessey Dodge Viper SRT10 tear up the asphalt.

2.

Choose the Polygonal Lasso Tool.

3.

And make a selection similar to mine on a wheel you want to make spin and smoke.

4.

In the menu click Filter, Blur and choose Radial Blur...

In the new settings window set the Amount to about 40, Blur Method to Spin and Quality to Best.

Click OK.

5.

The wheel has now a spinning effect.

Don't worry if it doesn't look perfect or the fact the tyre running area is not spinning, we are going to hide that with smoke.

6.

Press D to set the black and white color and click to Set foreground color ...

7.

... enter # 999999 to set a grey smoke color and click OK.

8.

Let's create a new layer.

In the menu click Layer, New and choose Layer...

And make the screen smoke.

In the menu click Filter, Render and choose Clouds.

9.

Set the new layer opacity to Pin Light.

10.

Now choose the Eraser Tool.

11.

Right click the picture, set the appropriate eraser brush size and set Hardness to 10%.

Press Esc to close the settings window.

12.

Set the Opacity to about 80% ...

13.

... and erase the smoke all around only to leave it around and behind the spinning wheel (see picture).

As we set the Opacity to 80% you need to drag your mouse a couple of times over the same area to delete the smoke completely. You can leave the traces of smoke as well on random areas of the picture if you want to achieve a allover smokey feel.

14.

Now reduce the Opacity to 20% ...

15.

... and uncover the rims a bit, not too much though.

16.

All there is left to be done is erase the edges of the smoke a bit to achieve a more realistic smoke effect.

17.

And we are done!

Noone behind the wheel though? Oh well it could be a RC guided Viper ;)
