An old school Brannan photo effect with Photoshop

We are going to recreate the popular Brannan filter from a popular iPhone photo sharing camera app Instagram.

1.
 

Open a picture you want to apply the Brannan effect to.

Click here if you want to learn how to apply the Instagram Hefe effect to a photo.

Press Ctrl+J to duplicate the layer and set the new layer blending mode to Overlay (see picture).

Press Shift + Ctrl + U to Desaturate the layer and set the Opacity to 38%.

 
 
4.
 

Select the original (Backround) layer.

Press Ctrl + U to open Hue/Saturation window and set the Saturation to -30.

Click OK.

In the menu click Layer and choose Merge Visible.

Press Ctrl + L to open Levels window and choose the same settings as I did ...

... choose the Red channel and choose the same settings as I did ...

 
 
8.
 

... choose the Green channel and choose the same settings as I did ...

... choose the Blue channel and choose the same settings as I did ...

Click OK.

In the menu click Image, Adjustment and choose Brightness/Contrast...

Set the Brightness to -10 and Contrast to 5.

Click OK.

Click Create a new layer button (see picture).

Click Set the foreground color (see picture)...

And put in the color code # fff8f2.

Click OK.

Set the new layer blending mode to Multiply.

You picture should look little something like this at this point.

Now select the original layer.

Press Ctrl + L to open Levels window and choose the same settings as I did ...

... choose the Red channel and choose the same settings as I did ...

... choose the Green channel and choose the same settings as I did ...

... choose the Blue channel and choose the same settings as I did ...

Click OK.

In the menu click Image, Adjustment and choose Brightness/Contrast...

Set the Brightness to -4 and Contrast to -1.

Click OK.

Again in the menu click Image, Adjustment and choose Brightness/Contrast...

Set the Brightness to 14 and click OK.

And you are done!
