Video transitions in Adobe Premiere

Another basic ingredient in video editing are transitions between clips, let's find out how to apply them.

  Author: mat | Version: CS5 | 6th December 2011 |

1.

Open Adobe Premiere, click File and choose Import and select two or more video clips and click Open.

You can Import one clip and cut it into smaller clips. Click here for the lesson on how to cut videos.

2.

Select the imported clips ...

Hold Ctrl and click to select more then one clip.

3.

... and drag them into Video 1 Timeline.

Use the timeline slider to zoom into the timeline a bit, so you have a better view of your clips (see picture).

4.

Now click the Effects tab and click Video Transitions (see picture).

5.

Now choose any transition you like.

I've chosen Dip to Black in the Dissolve folder.

6.

Just drag and drop the transitions between the two clips (see picture) and you're done.

If a warning window pops up just click OK.

7.

Click Play button to see your transition in action.

8.

You can stretch duration of the transition by draggin it to the left or right on your timeline (see picture).

9.

If you click the Effect Control tab you get to choose the transition settings a bit more in dept.

Play with the settings, choose and try some other transitions as well, be creative, in case of any doubts or questions, please don't hesitate on using our Forum.
