Drive into the matrix effect in GIMP

I'm going to show how easy it is to make this matrix like cyber effect in a free image editing software GIMP.

  Author: mat | Version: 2.6.11 | 7th August 2011 |

1.

Open a picture in GIMP.

I decided to edit a Spyker C8 car.

2.

Let's make a copy of the layer you just opened.

In the Layers window right click the Background layer and click Duplicate Layer.

If you're unable to see the Layers window, click Windows and Toolbox (CTRL + B for the keyboard shortcut)

3.

Click Scissors Select Tool in the Toolbox.

4.

Let's select the front part of the car.

Start clicking the edge of the car ...

5.

...like that, smaller the space between the points of clicking more accurate the result.

6.

...keep on clicking all the way around ...

7.

...until you come to the starting point. Click it.

8.

Like that.

9.

Press Enter key to create the selection.

10.

Click Filters, Edge-Detect, Edge

Now set the amount accordingly ...

I've set it to 1.

11.

... this is how it should look like at this point.

12.

Click Colors and Colors Balance.

13.

Set Green to 100

14.

Now choose Shadows and set the green also on 100.

15.

Do the same for Highlights.

16.

We got into the matrix.

17.

Click the Eraser Tool ...

18.

...and set the Opacity to 15.

19.

No start erasing the edges on the green part of the car, by clicking and holding mouse button.

20.

When finished click Select and None (Shift + Ctrl+ A for a keyboard shortcut)

21.

That's the end result. Pretty cool for a few minute job right?
