Best way to protect your Windows 8 computer against viruses for free

We are going to download and install one of the best if not the best free anti-virus protection programs out there.

  Author: mat | Version: 2014 | 31st March 2014 |

1.

Go to AVG AntiVirus 2014 download page and click Free Download.

In case the direct download link isn't working anymore, go to http://www.avg.com/ and click the Free Download link there.

2.

Wait for the AVG to download then run the avg_free..exe installation file.

Confirm the security warning if it happens to pop-up.

3.

Choose your preferred language and click Next.

4.

Accept the terms.

5.

Choose Basic protection and click Next.

If you want the free AVG version that is.

6.

Choose Custom Install and click Next.

7.

I suggest you to leave all the components selected and click Next.

8.

Wait for the installation process to finish.

9.

When AVG is successfully installed, either leave the 'I want to help AVG improve its products...' checked or uncheck it, as you wish ...

10.

... and click Finish.

11.

AVG AntiVirus program will start updating its virus definitions immediately.

12.

You will get the Protected sign when the virus definitions are up to date.

13.

You can check if your computer caught any viruses or other threats by clicking Scan now (see picture).

14.

This can take a while, you can go and to some other stuff while the AVG is scanning through your computer.

If it finds some viruses, it will automatically delete the infected files and you will get a report.

When done, you can close the AVG window as the AntiVirus program will always run in the background and notify you every time it stumbles upon a virus or any other threat to your computer.

15.

You can always access the AVG AntiVirus by clicking the AVG AntiVirus icon in your Windows 8 Toolbar.
