Subtract time and display its negative value in Excel

I will show you a nice little Microsoft Excel trick which you can use to subtract time and also display its negative time value.

Open a new empty Excel document and enter two "times" each in one row.

Click the row bellow (see picture).

In the entry field enter = ...

... click the the cell with the lower time (see picture) ...

... enter the - (minus) and then click the cell showing higher time (see picture).

Confirm by pressing Enter. As a result you should now see a bunch of ####### characters and that's not really great looking result is it.

Now click File in the menu ...

.... and choose Options.

In the new window click Advanced.

Under When calculating this workbook settings enable the Use 1904 date system option (see picture).

Click OK.

Excel should now display the negative time the right way.
