I will show you how to enable desktop notifications, so you will notice a new email, even if you are not in the window where you have your Gmail account open.

1.

For Google desktop notifications to work, you need a Google Chrome web browser.

If you don't have Chrome, you can download it here.

Login to your Gmail account. Click the Options button and choose Settings from the drop down menu (see picture).

2.

Under the General tab, look for Desktop Notifications then enable the New mail notifications on option.

If you are not using Chrome, then you will see the a note saying: "This browser does not support desktop notifications. To enable notifications, upgrade your browser to Google Chrome".

3.

All there is now left to do is click the Save Changes button bellow.

4.

And from now on, when you receive a new email, you will get a desktop notification like this.

To get notifications, your Google Chrome browser needs to be opened and you need to be logged in to your Gmail account.

And later on if you decide you don't need these desktop notifications any more, you can simply turn them off, by enabling the Mail notifications off option you can see in step 2 of this tutorial.
