How to create a fake HDR effect using Photoshop

An effective and simple way of turning a normal photograph into a HDR looking image with Adobe Photoshop.

Open a photo you want to apply the HDR effect to.

In the menu click Image, Adjustments and choose Shadows/Highlights...

In the Shadows/Highlights window select  Show More Options.

Under Shadows choose the similar settings as I did.

Don't close the windows yet ...

Under Highlights choose the similar settings as I did and click OK.

Duplicate the by clicking Layer in the menu and choosing Duplicate Layer...

Click OK to confirm the new layer.

Set the blending mode for the new layer to Color Dodge (see picture).

Choose the original layer (see picture).

 
 
8.
 

Duplicate the by clicking Layer in the menu and choosing Duplicate Layer...

Click OK to confirm the new layer.

 
 
9.
 

Set the blending mode for the new layer to Linear Burn (see picture).

Don't mind if the picture just got very dark.

Duplicate the by clicking Layer in the menu and choosing Duplicate Layer...

Click OK to confirm the new layer.

This is about how it should look like by now.

Set the blending mode for the new layer to Overlay (see picture).

Now choose the layer where the Lienar Burn is set (see picture), and set the Opacity to 10% (see picture).
