How to add subtitles to MKV video file

I will show you how to add subtitles to a MKV video file using a free software in a matter of minutes.

  Author: NikMan | Version: 5.8.0 | 6th December 2012 |

1.

I have a MKV video file and SRT file with subtitles.

MKV is a HD video format, SRT is a text file containing subtitles for the video.

2.

First thing's first, let's download a free applicaton for editing MKV files and adding subtitles.

Click here, to open official MKVToolnix website.

3.

Find the Download from our site link, click to download it and isntalle the MKVToolnix to your computer.

Installing the program is pretty straight forward, if you experience any difficulties don't hesitate, click the Comments and let us know.

4.

When you are done installing, launch the MKV edit program, launch the kvmerge GUI and click add.

5.

Choose the MKV video file you want to add subtitles to and click Open.

I renamed the files to a name of a well known movie so it's easier to imagine the whole process.

6.

The program will now display all the so called tracks that are included in the MKV video file.

Video track, audio track, chapters, subtitles,...

7.

We are now going to add a new track for our subtitles.

Click add.

8.

Choose the subtitles file and click Open.

SRT subtitle file in my case.

9.

The subtitles we just added should now be included in tracks.

10.

All there is left to do now is to name the new file and click the Start muxing button.

11.

Wait a few minutes for the process to do its thing.

12.

And here is my new MKV video file with integrated subtitles.

Great little piece of software!

I use iDealshare VideoGo to add subtitles to MKV with this easy guide from http://www.idealshare.net/video-converter/mkv-subtitles.html

It also helps to remove subtitles from MKV or extract subtitles from MKV.
