How to create a black and white motivational poster

Let's create that simplified black and white effect on a photo using threshold adjustment and make a so called Internet meme or a motivational poster ready to be printed on an A4 size paper.

First let's create an A4 sized document that will fit perfectly onto an A4 paper.

In the menu click File and choose New...

In the settings window set Preset to  International Paper and Size to A4.

Click OK.

Choose the Rectangular Marquee Tool (M for a keyboard shorcut).

Make a selection like I did (see picture).

In the menu click Edit and choose Stroke...

In the Stroke settings window set Width to 185 px and set a black Color.

Click OK.

Press Ctrl + D, to delete the selection.

This is how it should look like by now.

Open a photo with a face.

The legendary Kevin Bacon in my case.

Choose Lasso Tool (L for a keyboard shorcut).

Select the face and upper part of the body (see picture).

You can also use the Quick Selection Tool if you like.

In the menu click Edit and choose Copy to copy the selection.

Go back to you original document.

In the menu click Edit and choose Paste.

In the menu click Edit and choose Free Transform.

Move the person in the middle of the frame and when needed resize it so it fits the black frame (see picture).

Press Enter to confirm the changes.

Let's no delete the parts sticking outside of the frame.

Choose the Rectangular Marquee Tool (M for the keyboard shorcut).

Make a selection of the inner side of the frame.

In the menu click Select and Inverse to inverse the selection.

Press Delete key to delete the selection.

Press Ctrl + D to remove the selection.

Let's now turn the black and white.
In the menu click  Image, Adjutments and choose Black & White....

Play wit the sliders a bit to make the hair a bit darker and face a bit brighter.

Click when done OK.

In the menu click Image, Adjutments and choose Threshold...

Now again play with the sliders to achieve the best effect for you picture and click OK when done.

This is how it should look like by now.

The only thing now left to do is add some text.
Choose the Horizontal Type Tool (T for a keyboard shortcut).

In the toolbar choose the Arial font and then Black.

Or choose the Black Arial font if you have one.

Choose the Black text color.

Click the document and enter the text you want for your picture.

Then click Edit and choose Free Transform.

Move and resize the text so it will fit above the black frame (see picture).

Press Enter to confirm the changes.
